Headteacher Coaching

Coaching for headteachers and school leaders

Headteacher coaching designed to support school leaders at all stages of headship. Whether you’re running on empty after giving everything to your school, navigating the demands of a new headship, or seeking strategic clarity on complex challenges, I understand the realities of leading under ever-shifting, complex systemic constraints while trying to sustain your own wellbeing, resilience and effectiveness. This personalised coaching supports confident leadership, sustainable school improvement and strategic decision making.

I am an Ambition Institute EHCO registered coach and LLSE registered NPQH and NPQEL executive coach.

Headship brings significant professional pressure, accountability and profound isolation. Many headteachers feel they have no safe space to think clearly without political consequences or fear of conversations getting back to those who employ them. Coaching provides confidential external support to address challenges such as workload, governance, inspection pressure, sustainability in the role, and whether to stay and lead differently or leave strategically.

When Headteachers Book Coaching

Headteachers typically reach out when:

Evaluating sustainability: You’re close enough to retirement to count the years, but far enough away that enduring the current pace feels unsustainable. Or you’re younger (late 30s or early 40s) with 20+ years ahead and already running on empty.

Loss of autonomy: New leadership, Trust restructuring, or governance changes have reduced your freedom to lead your school in the way you believe is right.

Need for confidential external support: You need a safe space to think strategically without political consequences, accountability pressures, or fear of conversations getting back to those who employ you.

Confidential, bespoke headteacher coaching

Our personalised headteacher coaching is designed to address the specific challenges you face in your role. Coaching focuses on your individual context and priorities, providing structured support aligned with your goals, professional responsibilities and wellbeing, enabling confident leadership and sustainable improvement.

What to expect from headteacher coaching

Headteacher coaching is delivered through confidential one-to-one sessions, tailored to your role, context and priorities. Coaching can be offered flexibly across the academic year, whether through a small number of sessions to support reflection and decision making, or a longer programme to provide ongoing support.

Coaching offers structured time to address leadership challenges, sustain wellbeing, manage pressure and develop effective strategies for your school and your role, with professional support throughout the agreed coaching period.

RenewEd Leadership

Claudia is also the author of RenewEd Leadership, which explores how professional coaching can support sustainable school leadership. Drawing on her experience as a secondary headteacher and leadership coach, the book introduces the Headteacher’s Compass framework of Balance, Clarity, Impact and Renewal.

The themes explored in the book closely reflect the focus of Claudia’s headteacher coaching, supporting school leaders to step back from daily pressures, think clearly and sustain themselves while leading complex organisations.

Coaching structure and session options

Coaching can be structured in different ways depending on your role, priorities and the level of support you are seeking. Options may include:

Termly coaching sessions: One session per term, providing focused support to reflect on key challenges, decision making and leadership priorities.

Half-termly coaching sessions: One session each half term, offering regular, consistent support to help you respond to the evolving demands of headship.

Ongoing coaching across the academic year: Coaching sessions spaced across the year to provide sustained support, reflection and professional development over time

Simon was a secondary headteacher managing multiple schools within a Trust while navigating profound family challenges. Through 6 sessions of coaching, he gained clarity to make a strategic decision: he moved to a primary school under local authority control, closer to home, with more autonomy. He is now thriving. Here’s what he said:

Leadership in school is demanding. Headship is the most crucial role and can be lonely at times. I can’t recommend coaching highly enough to help you find focus, make time for reflection, create space to avoid becoming distracted, and overcome being overwhelmed by operational noise.
